- First unscrew the float to empty the water.
- If you are just temporarily fixing the ball valve, simply tie the plastic bag around where the ball valve should be. To permanently fix it, use a brand new BALL VALVES.
- Turn the water supply that goes to the cistern
- Turn off the water supply to the cold water storage tank if the problem is originating from the cistern. Then turn on the bathroom cold taps to drain it.
- Drain the supply pipe by flushing the cistern.
- If your valve is the brass portsmouth, disengage the float arm. Then, using the pliers, remove the securing pin.
- You may need lubricating oil to loosen the cap at the end of the valve. Then use a wrench to unscrew the cap.
- By using the blade of the screwdriver, lever out the piston in the slot of the valve. Take out the old washer with a one-piece piston. Replace the washer with a new one. In the case of a two-piece piton, rotate it. Then use the screwdriver to unscrew the cap and take out the washer. Then replace the washer with a new one.
- Using the lubricating oil, lubricate the piston. Clean the valve.
- Once you have put the valve together, you can turn on the water supply.
- Keep an eye on the cistern so that it only fills up right under the warning level.
- If you have a diaphragm valve, you need to remove the end cap by unscrewing the retaining nut at the end of the valve body.
- Use the screwdriver to level out the old diaphragm and put in a new one. Be sure to pay attention to how the old diaphragm was inserted so that the new one can be put in the exact same way.
- After you reassemble the valve, it is now safe to turn the water supply back on.
- Everything should be running as needed.
Any Problems with the Result?
If you find that even after performing these DIY steps that there are still problems, it’s best to contact your plumber. If you would try to do more to remedy the situation, it could cause more damage and a much larger bill from the plumber. However, if these steps are followed correctly, everything should work just as expected.
Since the ball valve controls the water flow right into your toilet system, it is an important matter to be addressed properly. If this isn’t completed properly, the water will overflow from the cistern pipe and make that cistern run dry.
